Attractions In Kochi
Chinese Fishing nets
Better known as the Cheenavala, these Chinese fishing nets are the source of livelihood for thousands of fishermen across Kochi. According to the native belief, it is Kublai Khan, the Chinese ruler, who had introduced these massive fishing nets in Kochi. A huge strech of the coast including Vypin and fort Kochi is found dotted with these nets. In reality, these nets symbolize fixed land installations that are used as land operated lift nets. People throng in these shores, especially during sunset just to watch the waters gleaming withthese nets spread over them.
Kathakali
Kathakali is one of the oldest dance forms of Kerela. Based mostly on mythical stories and legends, the stories portrayed by the dance of Kathakali is mostly thematic, with the win of the good over the evil, being the staple one among them. Though the characters dance with elaborate dresses, makeup and facial expressions, the skilled craftsmanship behind the choreography and dance style is incredible and astounding.
Jew Town
It is the lucrative opportunities in trade and commerce that had brought the Jews to Kochi, as early as 700 B.C. natives are also of the view that many Jews had settled in this area as early as the rule of the ancient Jewish ruler, King Solomon. The ‘black Jews’ as well as the ‘white Jews’ had become so plentiful in number, that the then Hindu Raja granted them a location for their own town right next to Kochi. This eventually came to be known as the “Jew Town”. Despite the fact that many Jews were locked to Israel, or were converted to Christianity, many Jews are still in the area. The Jewish Synagogue in the Jew Town is a must see for the visitors here.
